This month’s Humans of Jacobs are the self-proclaimed roomies of the year Adriana Martinez and Djiba Wone. The two first met because they were allocated into the same room as roommates when they first arrived in September 2018. Since then their relationship has blossomed and they now greatly enjoy each other’s friendship.
Adriana and Djiba play many roles on campus that keep the Jacobs Community vibrant and active. Some of Adriana’s main roles this year include being the Head of the Participants Committee for the Jacobs Start-up Competition (JSC), which you can read about here, and being the main organizer for Art Fest. Art Fest is a student-organized art exhibition that celebrates the diversity and creativity of students from all over the world and talented artists from Bremen, Lower Saxony, and Hamburg. Art Fest prides itself in celebrating art in all its forms, including paintings, photographs, films, theatre pieces, poetry, musical performances and much more. Although Art Fest 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic, last year, under the theme “A Palette of Emotions,” they showcased more than 170 masterpieces, from 33 students and 29 external artists, with the participation of over 30 student performances and 8 art-related clubs.
Djiba is also highly involved on campus! She is most known for her role working in the Krupp College Office – known to many as the KCO. Krupp is the first and pioneering college at Jacobs University and opened in 2001. Within the KCO, Djiba works hard to uplift the Krupp values which are to be a homely, inclusive and relaxed environment where everyone is welcome. Krupp is known to be calm and relatively quiet, but with lots of lively, creative and large-scale activities to take part in, such as community dinners, acoustic nights and creative cheer up activities. Djiba also works with the KCO team to host the main Krupp events on campus which include two acoustic nights per year, where people can come and showcase their musical talent and the well renowned annual Valentines Party!
Together, Djiba and Adriana make valuable contributions to the Jacobs Community – and to their friendship. The dynamic duo loves to try out new restaurants or just ordering in. But beyond everything, and as Djiba would put it: “Honestly we love to talk. We could sit and talk for hours.” Whether it is seeking council in one another or just reporting the day’s events or their feelings, the two have the privilege of each other’s companionship. Among many of their great memories together, the two took the time during quarantine to challenge themselves to get better at running and were each able to complete one of their first 10k runs!
Although they will not be living together in their 3rd and final year at Jacobs, they got the chance and worked towards building a unique friendship in their two years as roommates and will forever proclaim themselves “Roomies for Life”. When asked about how they would sum their friendship, the two said “Midnight’s snacks, running escapades, study sessions, and many laughs made our two years as roommates the best ones so far”.
