Caucasus University: The Business School That Became Something More

Caucasus University is a private university in Tbilisi, Georgia. It was founded in 1998 as the Caucasus School of Business by a consortium of Georgian universities (Tbilisi State University, Georgian Technical University, Tbilisi State University of Economic Relations) in partnership with Georgia State University. In 2004, the school became fully private, and Caucasus University was established on its foundation. CU has maintained its international outlook while also significantly expanding its profile and now runs 10 professional and graduate schools, from law and media to architecture, tourism, and medicine.
How did a business school transform into a fully fledged university? What role does it play in the Georgian higher education system? We will discuss this and more with Kakha Shengelia, President of Caucasus University.
Kakha Shengelia – President, Caucasus University
Kakha Shengelia has been President of Caucasus University since 2008 and has served on the executive board of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), which he has also led as President. Before moving into university leadership, he served in Georgian public life: Vice-Mayor of Tbilisi for Social Affairs from 2002 to 2004 and a Member of Parliament from 2004 to 2008, during which he was deputy chair of the foreign affairs committee and later of the committee on education, science, sport, and culture. He holds an MBA from the University of Hartford, an MA in world history and international relations from Tbilisi State University, and a PhD from Georgian Technical University.
