Constructor University Professor publishes practical book on loneliness
Dr. Sonia Lippke, Professor at Constructor University, will release a new book on August 15, 2024, titled “Connected Instead of Lonely: Ways to More Resonance with Oneself and Others,” which aims to help people overcoming loneliness. The new book, coauthored with coach and mediator Christiane Smidt, will be presented at a reading on September 6, 2024, at 7.30 pm, at the renowned “Otto und Sohn” bookstore in Bremen. State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Anja Stahmann, will be attending the event as the guest of honor to offer introductory remarks.
Prof. Sonia Lippke and her coauthor Christiane Smidt decided to write a book on loneliness about two years ago. The aim was to present the topic to readers in a scientifically grounded and practical manner. Originally planned as a non-fiction book, this idea has since evolved into a comprehensive guide full of practical advice and support options for those affected and professionals. The authors illustrate various forms of loneliness with concrete case studies. Practical, evidence-based recommendations and exercises are designed to help those experiencing high level of loneliness gradually find a way out of isolation and improve their quality of life. Additionally, the book shows how relatives and professionals in the (psycho-)social field can support those affected.
Loneliness can occur as a result of psychological disorders or as a side effect of various life events. Although loneliness itself is not dangerous, it can have many negative effects on people's mental and physical health. The book aims to prevent loneliness and provide valuable ways to overcome it. “There is no need to be anxious about loneliness. Just like thirst, it has a function. It is an invitation to optimize something – be it the improvement of one’s own social network or the initiation of the time with oneself in a way that it is experienced as a benefit,” explained Lippke.
Prof. Lippke has been a professor at Constructor University Bremen since 2011. Her research mainly focuses on various aspects of aging. Recently, she was serving as board member for the creation of the 9th Federal Report on Aging.
Mrs. Smidt works independently as a systemic coach and alternative practitioner for psychotherapy with people in various contexts of unwanted or wanted life changes. The topic of loneliness as a result of social anxiety, unemployment or separation is becoming increasingly important in her counseling. "Loneliness doesn't make it if people learn how to establish and maintain good connections with others," says Christiane Smidt with regard to protective factors against loneliness.
The book will be available in both printed and e-book formats. In addition to this, it contains working materials that help one develop their own approach to the topic and create a personal toolbox to overcome loneliness.
All interested parties are cordially invited to the book presentation for further insights. Important findings and recommendations from the authors will be discussed, and there will be opportunities for direct exchange and joint activities. Entrance tickets are available for 5 Euro with the authors.
The book can be ordered in any well-stocked bookshop or directly from the publisher.
