Small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the German economy. Many of them are already very successful in business abroad; others are in the midst of planning for this step. What hurdles have to be cleared in the course of internationalization, and what is the best strategy? This is the topic of discussion for company representatives, scientists, students, and alumni at the annual Jacobs University Career Symposium on September 23rd in the Campus Center of the international university.

Fast decision-making channels and a high degree of flexibility are the basic characteristics associated with SMEs. What are their actual advantages in international competition, especially in comparison to larger companies? What special requirements have to be met to become “international”? And whatrole do the employees and their intercultural competencies play in this context? These are just some of the questions being addressed on September 23, 2016 by the participants at the Career Symposium “Challenges and Perspectives of Internationalization of Germany’s SME Sector” in the Campus Center of Jacobs University.

The introductory presentation will be given by Christoph Weiss, Vice President of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce and CEO of BEGO Bremer Goldschlägerei Wilh. Herbst GmbH & Co KG. Company representatives from Vector Foiltec, Kreditech Holding SSL, Traum-Ferienwohnungen, Rocket Internet, SIKORA, and zeroG will report on their experience taking the step into the worldwide market. Some of the presenters are former students of Jacobs University.

The symposium initiated by the Career Services Center at Jacobs University is the traditional kick-off event for the homecoming of the alumni. Once a year, the former students of the international university meet on campus; this year it is the graduating classes 2006 and 2011. “We are always very happy to see our former students again. With their experience, they will again make a valuable contribution to the symposium this year!” Of that Predrag Tapavicki, Head of Corporate Relations and Talent Management at Jacobs University is certain.
