Shaping digitization, promoting entrepreneurial thinking: Jacobs University offers new study programs
May 12, 2022
The world is in the midst of the digital transformation. Skills in dealing with data are becoming increasingly important; they are a key competence and in enormous demand in all areas of society. Jacobs University Bremen is taking this development into account by offering new study programs. From the fall semester of 2022, the Bachelor's degree in "Computer Science & Software Engineering" and the two minors "Data Science" and "Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Management" belong to the university’s study offer.
The three-year undergraduate study program "Computer Science & Software Engineering" will be the first subject at Jacobs University that can be studied completely online. The program is strongly application-oriented, teaching core competencies in software engineering and programming as well as in relevant areas of modern computer science including artificial intelligence, data analysis, or machine learning. It uses innovative teaching methods such as the "Flipped Classroom" concept. This didactic concept makes learning content available in prepared form before the event, for example as videos. This way, the time spent together in the virtual room can be used for practical exercises and applications.
Also new is the minor "Data Science". Minors at Jacobs University can be combined with almost any study program, including social sciences, economics, engineering, or natural sciences. Students who choose "Data Science" will develop relevant data competencies that are linkable to their major study program. Topics include the data analysis pipeline and essential data operations, societal and legal implications of data science and digitization, business and career opportunities, fundamentals of computer science and key mathematical principles. Flexible educational formats (mostly online and hybrid) allow for asynchronous learning. A practice-oriented learning approach combines hands-on computational exercises with case studies and real-world applications.
With the minor "Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Management", Jacobs University not only aims to promote entrepreneurial thinking and action among its students, but also to encourage them to found their own start-ups. It aims to teach the basics in the area of technology and innovation management. This includes, for example, knowledge of finance and accounting, digital transformation, or innovation management.
Together with its Swiss cooperation partner, the Schaffhausen Institute of Technology (SIT), Jacobs University has additionally initiated the master's program "Computer Science and Software Engineering." Also starting in the 2022 fall semester, the two-year Master of Science will impart knowledge from the fields of computer science and software engineering, as well as business and project management.
