General Language Course Regulations

The following regulations apply to all German language courses at Constructor University

Attendance

  • Attendance is mandatory from the first day of classes.
  • Students who miss more than three sessions without an official excuse during the semester won’t be admitted to the final exam.
  • Students who missed more than ten sessions (whereby at least seven sessions are official excuses) are requested to consult the respective module coordinator (see contacts) before a decision regarding the admission to the module assessment or its grading can be made. 
  • Homework assignments are treated the same as attendance, and if not submitted, they count toward the total number of unexcused absences.

If you are unable to attend a language course, you must provide an official excuse. Please follow the university's Excuse from Academic Obligations procedure.

ECTS Credits

A standard language course (150 minutes of instruction per week plus homework and self-study) is worth 2.5 ECTS credits. ECTS credits cannot be awarded for a student's native language (first language/mother tongue).

Placement Test

  • A placement test is mandatory before enrolling in any language course, if the student has prior knowledge of the language.
  • In special cases, students may register for a course half a level above their placement result at their own risk and only in consultation with the German Language Program.

Course Progression

  • A language course cannot be repeated after successfully completing it.
  • Students may continue to the next proficiency level after successfully passing the previous course.
  • Students can only complete levels in sequence; that is, they cannot take lower-level courses if they have already completed the levels above them.

Credit Transfer

German language transfer credits may be accepted upon approval. Credits are generally recognized if they are earned 

  • at another university or at accredited institutions such as Goethe Institut and
  • if the workload and curriculum are comparable and
  • for the same proficiency level.

Minimum Registration

Constructor University reserves the right to cancel language courses with fewer than ten participants.

Language Course Examination Guidelines

Students who wish to receive ECTS credits for a language module must successfully pass all required examinations.

If a student fails an examination, the assessment must be repeated according to university regulations.

Make-up Examinations

Students who are unable to attend an exam can avoid incurring a failed attempt if all of the following conditions are met:

  1. An official (medical) excuse has been submitted to Registrar Services.
  2. The course instructor has been informed before the scheduled exam.

Academic Integrity

Students who intentionally conceal previous language knowledge in order to enroll in a lower-level course violate the Code of Academic Integrity. 
Constructor University reserves the right to take all appropriate disciplinary measures in such cases.
