Most of our students (and their families who accompany/visit them) might find themselves overwhelmed at the prospect of booking air tickets from international destinations to Bremen. With many different airlines and airports to travel through, it is hard to know what is the most straightforward and cost-effective option to travel to Bremen from international destinations. Here are some tips regarding the most common international airports in Germany, the Netherlands, and France.
Bremen Airport/Flughafen Bremen (BRE)
Bremen airport is relatively small, and direct flights are possible to different European destinations and locations within Germany (most commonly to Frankfurt and Munich). There is also a separate terminal for Ryanair, which also offers a wider selection of flights at a much cheaper price. The beauty of the Bremen Airport is that it is very close to the city center and extremely easy to access! The tram from the airport to the Bremen Main Station takes merely 16 minutes.
Hamburg Airport/Flughafen Hamburg (HAM)
Hamburg airport is the closest major international airport, with many international airlines flying directly from international destinations, the most common being Emirates and Turkish Airlines.
It is about 2 hours away by train directly from the airport to Bremen Main Station. The entire journey is covered by the Lower Saxony Ticket/Niedersachsen Ticket, which costs 24 Euros for one person (with the possibility to travel cheaper for groups of up to 5 people).
Hannover Airport/Flughafen Hannover-Langenhagen (HAJ)
Hannover airport is the next closest major international airport, with many international airlines flying directly from international destinations. It is about 2.5 hours by train directly from the airport to Bremen Main Station. The entire journey is covered by the Lower Saxony Ticket/Niedersachsen Ticket, which costs 24 Euros for one person (with the possibility to travel cheaper for groups of up to 5 people).
Frankfurt/Flughafen Frankfurt am Main (FRA), and Munich/Flughafen München (MUC) Airports
Frankfurt and Munich airports serve many international airlines flying to Germany, and are typically the most common transfer points for those looking to fly to Bremen. The most common airlines flying directly to Frankfurt and Munich are the Star Alliance airlines (e.g. Lufthansa, Thai Airways, Asiana Airlines, Korean Air, Singapore Airlines, and ANA).
Traveling to Bremen by train from the Frankfurt airport is also possible, and the journey can take anywhere from 4.5 hours to 6 hours depending on the connections. The train ticket can be purchased via the Deusche Bahn website.
Traveling to Bremen by train from Munich can take anywhere from 6 to 8 hours depending on the connections, so it is best to fly directly to Bremen if you want to save time (flight time is about 1.5 hours).
