“Die fünfte Jahreszeit” as German people would say, has begun (the fifth season of the year). Autumn has started, the leaves are changing their colours to red, green and yellow. Everyone is getting excited for the “Bremer Freimarkt”, a yearly anticipated event. For two and a half weeks in October, Bremer Freimarkt provides around 320 exhibitors that offer a wide variety of delicacies, exciting rides, and a great atmosphere. It is considered to be one of the biggest highlights for locals, as well as for visitors from all around the world. It happens once a year where everyone, regardless of their age, gender, country, and background comes together and enjoys their time with their friends, partners and families.
Being one of the oldest German folk festivals that has its 984th anniversary in 2019, Bremer Freimarkt attracts on average 4 million people every year. From my point of view, as a person who grew up in Bremen and lived her whole life in this wonderful city, I realize how much I appreciate this time of the year because this great event brings life to the city. Freimarkt, with its 2 ½ weeks in autumn is something truly special and unique where everyone finds something that brings them true joy.

Studying at Jacobs University in my second year and taking my friends from all over the world to Freimarkt brings me a lot of happiness. During this period of time, in which midterms are taking place, it is very convenient to just take the train from the university to the city center in only 17 minutes. This also refreshes our minds with a break from studying and allows students from different nationalities to learn more about German culture.
Arriving at Freimarkt, you will be bombarded with a combination of fun rides and delicious food. Whether you choose a traditional carousel or the newest roller coaster, the air rifle stand or the bumper cars, Freimarkt offers fun for everyone. It also provides a wide range of traditional culinary delights: fish bread, Bratwurst, “Schmalzkuchen”, as well as food from across the globe: churros, pizza, Asian noodles, Turkish and Greek goodies, and much more.
With an extremely central location directly behind the main train station, Freimarkt is the ideal place join the festivities inside a so-called “Bayernzelt” (a Bavarian tent). It is the time to celebrate to very traditional German music and have a second Oktoberfest. On average, the Bayern tent has 70.000 visitors during those 17 days which brings a fun atmosphere. The Bremer Freimarkt units everyone, regardless of their age or where they come from. This is the reason for its long tradition which I am sure will last.
