Prosit Neujahr! (And Berliner Pfannkuchen)

Prosit Neujahr! (And Berliner Pfannkuchen)

Germany is not one of the countries to celebrate New Year's Eve lightly, as every year, the German cities light up from wonderful firework shows. People tend to plan a trip for their new year celebration and dress up. People's plans vary, but what doesn’t change is that Germans tend eat Berliner Pfannkuchen on the first day of the new year. These jelly-filled doughnuts (without a hole in the middle) topped with powdered sugar have many names, such as Krapfen (in Southern Germany), Kreppel (in Hesse), and Pfannkuchen (inside Berlin). In Bremen, one can find this delicious treat as a ‘Berliner’.

But before you get one yourself, beware, sometimes these sweets turn out to be filled with an interesting surprise. Every once in a while, the Berliner can have a taste of mustard or onions and not jelly. If you have missed trying one of these goodies around New Years’ Eve, don't worry - nowadays, the German doughnuts can be found all year around, freshly made in most bakeries.

The Jacobs Blog team hopes you enjoy a delicious Berliner and wishes you a great 2021 filled with positive emotions and good health!
