This Saturday it’s that time again: For the tenth time already, the rowers of Jacobs University will meet the HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration on the Außenalster (Outer Alster). In addition to the men’s eight, three other boat classes will meet head to head, namely the women’s two, women’s four, and men’s four. The competition on the water takes up a tradition at many Anglo-American universities.

The Hamburg teams are slight favorites going into the races. With Eric Johannesen they have an Olympic champion in the German eight team. On the other hand, the Bremen teams are trained by a multiple world champion, Marita Hesse, who, among other things, won the women’s quadruple sculls in Seville in 2002. Many of the rowers at Jacobs University are there for the first time; some only learned to row after the start of the school year. Marita Hesse describes the task as follows: “Developing competitive rowers in the time frame from Fall to Spring is a great challenge.”

The main race between Jacobs University’s women’s coxed eight and HSBA starts at about 5:00 p.m.; 40 minutes earlier, the men’s fours will be the first boats to start. The competition offers a colorful program with musical accompaniment by the HSBA-Band, a bounce house, and brats on the grill. It all happens at the Ruder-Gesellschaft Hansa e.V., in the green area at Fährhausstraße, on the Außenalster in Hamburg.

The Hanse Boat Race is held as a sign of the particularly close ties between the two private universities of these Hanseatic cities. The main sponsor of the competition is Buss Group GmbH & Co. KG. The event is also supported by Georg Duncker GmbH & Co. KG and by the auditing firms of Baker Tilly Roelfs AG, and KPMG AG.
