Today is International Women´s Day! Its roots can be found in the early 1900s women´s movement and was officially celebrated by the United Nations in 1975.

In 1908 unrest and debates occured amongst women in New York, 15.000 women marched through the streets demanding better working conditions and political rights. In March of the following year, Women´s Days were celebrated in Northamerica and some European Countries. In 1913, International Women´s Day was set to 8 March, while further women in Europe joined the movement. The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in 1977 to proclaim the United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.

It is celebrated all over the world with thousands of events, conferences, concerts and gatherings to point out the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

Jacobs University is supporting equal rights of every human being, women and men – as are our students, who are organizing the Women's International Leadership Conference on 16 and 17 April (WIL). The WIL Conference aims at raising awareness about the misrepresentation of women in leadership positions, unleashing the potential of its participants by identifying obstacles and teaching concrete skills, herewith contributing to a more equal and better world for all genders. WIL is a solely student-led initiative first conceptualized at Jacobs University Bremen by young women aged 18 to 23 from uniquely diverse backgrounds.
