Bremen has many interesting places which are worth visiting from restaurants to museums, some of them more popular than others. One of the not-so-popular places that are very rewarding and educational is the Denkort Bunker Valentin in Farge. It is the second largest above-ground bunker in Europe, but since it was built, it never had a submarine in it. Its construction began in 1943, with the idea that submarines could be constructed inside during the war and protected by the bunker. After so many years, the construction is a memorial honoring the thousands of workers who lost their lives due to poor conditions, hunger, and disease.
The site is open from Tuesday through Friday and on Sunday between 10 AM and 4 PM. The entrance is free, there are audio speakers in English and the people who work there are very helpful with any questions you may have. The bunker itself is huge, however only the safe part of it is open to the public. A path will lead you through the bunker and around it towards the main information station, which is in total around 1,5 km. The place is beautiful and terrifying with a lot of history and is definitely one of the landmarks that are worth visiting while you are in Bremen.
