Short Overview

Laser spectroscopy in the energy and time domain is applied to investigate and control the structure and dynamics of molecules.

Raman spectroscopy is mainly used as tool for the investigation of material properties. Examples are the identification of carcinogenic tissue and marker substances (coop. Brix and Lerchl, Jacobs University; Wenk, Klinikum Bremen-Nord; Hu, Wuhan University, China) as well as for the characterization of food, polymers, and many other substances. For this, techniques are developed, which are for example based on the surface enhancement of the Raman signal (SERS) by nanostructured metal surfaces (coop. Wagner, Constructor University) and nano metal clusters. Characteristic vibrational modes serve as "molecular fingerprints" of molecules (see e.g. Fig. 1) and can be also considered a probe for observing molecular changes due to interactions with the environment.

Using femtosecond time-resolved laser spectroscopy, the ultrafast energy transport in molecular systems is investigated and controlled. Examples are the internal conversion processes and the inter-molecular energy flow for pigment molecules relevant to photosynthesis (see e.g. Fig. 2). In order to realize “artificial photosystems”, the molecules are embedded in nanometer-sized silica cages (coop. Richards, Constructor University) as well as liposomes (coop. Winterhalter, Jacobs University). The control of vibrational dynamics, which is relevant for selective chemistry, is achieved by shaping the femtosecond laser pulses in a self-learning loop approach (coop. Kleinekathöfer, Constructor University).

New research projects are focusing on the analysis of biofilms forming on microplastics using Raman and SERS spectroscopy, the study of ultrafast charge-carrier generation and transport in organic semiconductors, and the investigation of vibrational dynamics in ionic liquids using fs-time-resolved spectroscopy.
