Placement & Registration

The following students are exempt from the placement test:

  • Complete beginners with no prior knowledge of German may register directly for German A1.1 in CampusNet.
  • Students who successfully completed a German language course in the previous semester may register directly for the next course level.

  • German native speakers and students with CEFR level C1 or higher may enroll directly in the Humanities lectures instead of German language courses.

     

The placement test is required for:

  • Students with previous knowledge of German who are joining the German Language Program for the first time.
  • Students whose placement test result is older than one semester and who did not successfully complete a German language course in the previous semester.
  • Students who have improved their German language skills outside Constructor University, for example through:
    • an internship
    • private study
    • an external language course

A placement test helps place students in the appropriate German language course based on their current language proficiency. The placement test is not graded and does not affect your final course grade. It is used solely for course placement.

Please note that course registration without a valid placement test cannot be accepted. Students with prior knowledge of German must not enroll in beginner-level courses. Registering for a beginner course despite existing language skills constitutes a violation of the Code of Academic Integrity.

When is the placement test available? 

The online placement test is open during the last week before the start of each spring and fall semester.

Students must complete the test independently no later than two days before course registration closes.

Before taking the test, please read the Instructions for the German Placement Test carefully and complete all exercises without using external resources or assistance.

 

What does my placement test result mean?

The placement test is intended to provide a rough indication of your German language skills and help us place you in the appropriate level. However, it is only a multiple-choice test that does not assess your writing and speaking skills. For this reason, students whose scores fall on the borderline between two levels may be placed at the lower of the two levels. Questions about your results or submissions of external language certificates (telc, TestDaF, Goethe, DSH, etc.) can be sent to the German program’s general email address

During the registration period at Constructor University, you can register for a German course on CampusNet. All German courses (online and campus-based) are listed in the course catalog on CampusNet at the same time as other courses.

  • It is not possible to register before or after the registration period
  • There is no drop-add period.
  • The number of participants per course and the totalnumber of German courses are limited
  • Spots are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Audits are not permitted in German courses.
     

If you and your language instructor agree that you were placed in the wrong level and you need to register for a different language level, you must:

  • check the alternative German courses offered at your level and compare the class times for the course you want to switch to with your class schedule
  • send an email to learngerman@constructor.university within the first two weeks of the semester and specify the proficiency level recommended by your course instructor and the specific course group you’d like to switch to

The course transfer will be processed as soon as possible, provided there are still available spots in the desired level and course. It is no longer possible to change courses after the second week of the semester.

If, after registering, you decide that you don't want to take a German course at all, you can also withdraw from the course without giving a reason by sending an email to registrar@constructor.university. This must also be done within the first two weeks of the semester.

Constructor University staff and faculty are welcome to improve their German language skills through our dedicated staff courses.

  • Beginner and intermediate German courses are offered specifically for staff members.
  • Staff with advanced German proficiency may join student courses if places are available.
  • Staff should complete the placement test at the beginning of the semester and register for their assigned course level through the Human Resources (HR) department.
