We are not gonna lie – German is not an easy language to learn. Thankfully, people in Bremen are very friendly and patient with newcomers! Most people speak enough English to communicate easily. But even if not, they are always happy to help as you fumble through your first few interactions, using the rudimental German that you will pick up in your classes or on the road.

Hallo! – Hello

Guten Morgen/Tag/Abend! – Good morning/day/evening!

Moin! – This is a more or less local greeting that means “Hi”, “Hello”, “ Good morning”, “Good night” and everything in between.

Wie geht’s? – How are you?

Ich heiße… – My name is…

Wie heißen Sie? – What is your name?

Ich komme aus… – I come from…

Bitte – Please

Danke – Thank you

Vielen Dank – Many thanks

Bitte schön – You’re welcome

Entschuldigung – Excuse me

Es tut mit leid – I’m sorry

Kein Problem – No problem

Auf wiedersehen! – The literal translation would be something like “until we see each other again”.

Tschüß! – Bye!

Bis später/dann/morgen! – Until later/then/tomorrow!

Wie viel kostet das? – How much does that cost?

Darf ich mit Karte bezahlen? – Can I pay with card?

 

Hungry? 

 Ich hätte gern… – I would like…

Die Rechnung, bitte – The bill, please

Noch ein bier, bitte! – Another beer, please!

Wo ist die Toilette? – Where is the bathroom?

 

Don’t get lost

Entschuldigung, wo ist…? – Excuse me, where is…?

Ich habe mich verlaufen – I am lost

 

Public transportation

Fährt dieser Zug/Bus nach…? – Does this train/bus go to…?

Wie viel kostet eine Fahrkarte nach…? – How much does a ticket to … cost?

 

Stranger danger

Hilfe! – Help!

Ich brauche die Polizei! – I need the police!

Es ist ein Notfall! – It is an emergency!

 

When all else fails

Ich verstehe nicht – I don’t understand

Können Sie das bitte wiederholen? – Could you please repeat that?

Sprechen Sie Englisch? – Do you speak English?

Ich spreche kein Deutsch – I don’t speak German
