Love Thy Neighbour: Is it a choice?
Presentation and Discussion

Every day we interact with individuals in both public and personal settings. Our interactions are highly defined by the social constructs that govern what is acceptable and unacceptable. These constructs are continuously tested daily and can vary highly both on the individual, community and cultural levels. Additionally, our responses to deviations of the social norms by other individuals are also affected. In this respect, we ask the question: what is the internal mechanism that actively gauges our responses to deviations of the norm? Is it nature or is it nurture?

Fundamentally, all behaviours are result of the anatomical and structural organization of the brain. Given the right paradigm, any behaviour can be measured ranging from single neuronal responses to more complex cognitive processing. Using the underlying principles, we attempt to address the latter pertaining to deviations of cultural norms. For example, how is the brain responding when we observe someone yelling in the middle of street? You may know how you would perceive the behaviour, but you do not know why.

We welcome you to join us in our lab on February 15, 2017 at 19:30 for an introduction to our study, some preliminary findings, and answer any questions you may have.
