Educating young people from around the world to be engaged, responsible, and successful problem solvers, regardless of their family and national origin – that was and remains the goal of Jacobs University. 15 years ago, on September 21, 2001, the private university began its teaching activities. Then as now the extensive campus in Bremen was a site of excellent research and teaching, and peaceful coexistence across the boundaries of cultures and nations.

An internationally oriented private campus university with English as the language of instruction, transdisciplinary, with scientists working consistently across disciplines to find long-term solutions, with the highest standards of research and teaching – that is the concept upon which it was founded. “I wish for you that in a few years your students will prove themselves as particularly able, able to perform independently, to make their own judgements – and able to lead others, which means: capable of responsibility.” These were the words of a greatly esteemed guest at the opening ceremonies on September 20, 2001, Ex-Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. His words have come true. The graduates of Jacobs University act worldwide as ambassadors of the private university and the federal state of Bremen. In national and international university rankings, the university continuously places among the top schools. Over 90 per cent of Bachelor students complete their degree in six semesters. With currently 102 countries, Jacobs University is one of the most international universities in Germany. The interculturality, young people of widely differing nationalities living closely together on campus, is fascinating and has an impact on students, teachers, employees, and guests – they name it the “Jacobs Spirit.” Academically Jacobs University is no less successful, the numerous national and international awards of its scientists attest to this. It wants to contribute to the solution of global problems of the 21st century and concentrates its research and teaching on three future-oriented areas: Mobility, understanding the worldwide movement of people, goods, and information. Health, the development of solutions for a healthier world. And diversity, decoding of a modern, global society. As a partner to business, the university cooperates with a great number of prestigious companies and promotes the transfer of knowledge to the benefit of both sides. There is also close cooperation with numerous top international universities, including, for example, Rice University in Houston, Texas and Capital Normal University in Beijing. 15 years are a short period of time in the development of a university. “Nevertheless, during this manageable period, the staff have succeeded in establishing Jacobs University in the national and international academic landscape,” says the university’s President, Professor Katja Windt. “For that, I would like to express my thanks. We are proud to be able to make a contribution in Bremen and for Bremen toward strengthening this academic and economic location – and we are pleased at the appreciation shown by our neighbors, the city and, of course, the Jacobs Foundation.” Professor Michael Hülsmann, Managing Director, adds: “Outstanding research and teaching require a solid economic foundation, which is also ensured through attractive offerings to partners in business. We are well on our way to a long-term future that is also economically secure.”
