Germany Today: New Course to explore Germany
9 November 2016
The idea came from the students. The class of 2016 of the Master program ‘Supply Chain Engineering and Management’ (SCEM) was eager to learn more about the country of their study; partially, because many of them were attracted by the prospect of staying in Germany after graduation.
Simply studying the language wasn’t enough for them. “We have responded to this demand by offering the course Germany Today since the beginning of the new academic year,” says Christoph Meyer, coordinator International Logistics. Dedicated to the study of Germany, the course covers Germany’s history since World War I, the political system, the social legislation as well as cultural customs. This course, lasting for 20 hours, is taught by Dr. Silke Cramer. Working closely with the relevant departments as well as students at Jacobs University, Dr. Cramer designed the structure and content of this course. “It is great to see that Jacobs University has not only listened to us students by setting up such a course, but also got us involved in shaping its content,” stresses Tianchan Wang, one of the first students enrolled in the new course. “The knowledge about the country will certainly contribute to the students’ integration,” says Meyer. The vast majority of SCEM-students decide to remain in Germany after graduation.
