Hanse Boat Race: Hamburg wins the Duel
April 24, 2017
Eight degrees, rain showers, stormy winds, waves: The Jacobs University rowers had to fight not only their opponents this weekend at the 10th Hanse Boat Race on Hamburg’s Outer Alster. In an exciting, energy-sapping race, the eight of the HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration crossed the finish line first. The Hamburg team has now extended its lead in the overall results to 7:3.
In contrast, among the women, it was the students at Jacobs University who triumphed. Both the women’s two and four won their races. In the men’s four, however, the Hamburg team was victorious. Many of the rowers at Jacobs University were at the Hanse Boat Race for the first time, which harkens back to the rowing competitions between Oxford and Cambridge; some had not even learned to row until the start of the school year.
The high point of the annual competition was the encounter between the eights of Jacobs University Bremen and HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration. The Hamburg team, who had Olympic champion Eric Johannesen in their boat, lived up to their role as favorite. In the end, in the 2,000 meter distance, they won the race with more than a boat’s length. The sought-after challenge cup was presented to the Hamburg team by Johann Killinger, Vice President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and primary sponsor of the Hanse Boat Race. The race was accompanied by a colorful program, in which the “Elbpearls” [Elbe River Pearls] cheerleaders and the HSBA band in particular ensured a good mood.
