July 31, 2015 Microscopic plastic parts are floating in our oceans and can be consumed by microbes and animals, thus ending up in our food chain. For two days, students from Rübenkamp High School, alongside exchange students from Mumbai, visited Jacobs University to analyze microplastics. “We want them to understand how microplastics spread in the ocean and how dangerous they are,” says microbiologist, Prof. Dr. Matthias Ullrich, who has been organizing the three-year cooperation with the high school.  The goal is to spark students’ interest in natural science research. For two days, students analyzed samples in the mornings and attended lectures in the afternoon. “We are learning a lot,” says Shrutnik Jadhav, one of the 17-year old exchange students from a high school in India.
