Bringing entrepreneurs and self-employed persons together with researchers, intensifying contact – that is the idea of the event series “Business Meets Science” of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce – IHK for Bremen and Bremerhaven. On January 26th representatives of both sides came together to share experience and opinions on the campus of Jacobs University.

For which main research areas does Jacobs University stand, what projects are being worked on there? For business representatives, the evening was a good opportunity to get to know the international university better and to discuss current topics and their own research concerns with the scientists. Because the goal of the event series is to strengthen the transfer of knowledge and technology in Bremen.

Professor Dr. Werner Nau, Dean of Jacobs University, presented the research areas in the Focus Areas of Diversity, Health, and Mobility. Afterwards, two examples of cooperation were shown: Dr. Arnulf Materny, Professor of Chemistry, and Sven Böhmer, from the Bremen based company Statex talked about their cooperation. Statex uses thermally and electrically conductive, antibacterial, antistatic, and shielding materials to produce safety suits for industry, as well as intelligent clothing, and also maintains a close communication with scientists at Jacobs University.

Another example is the intensive cooperation between Atlas Elektronik and Jacobs University Dr. Werner Henkel, Professor of Electrical Engineering, and Dr. Frank Brand from Atlas Elektronik talked about their collaboration addressing the challenge of transferring signal data from numerous acoustic sensors along a cable that was originally designed for electric power supply purposes, only. The evening concluded with an informal and inspiring get-together of business representatives and professors from a wide variety of disciplines.
