It’s all in your head

Employees with intercultural skills, who are familiar with the particular characteristics of the respective target markets, are among the key resources in a successful strategy of internationalization. This was agreed to by all the participants at the third Career Symposium of Jacobs University. The event last weekend dealt with the question of how small and mid-size companies (SMEs) can succeed in international markets. About 250 attendees took part in the meeting, at which managers, scientists, as well as current and former students of Jacobs University discussed the special challenges and perspectives of internationalization – in particular in the context of SMEs. Among others, the participants included BEGO Bremer Goldschlägerei Wilh. Herbst GmbH & Co KG, Vector Foiltec, Kreditech Holding SSL, Traum-Ferienwohnungen, Rocket Internet/Cuponation, SIKORA, and zeroG. Each company presented its own path to internationalization. Some were represented by Jacobs University Alumni. “It is a wonderful success that representatives of prestigious companies have gathered here with us once again this fall, that science and practice entered into dialogue!” says Predrag Tapavicki, Head of Corporate Relations and Talent Management at Jacobs University. The symposium also served as a way of bringing the international students of Jacobs University closer together with mid-sized companies. “We understand ourselves as a place of knowledge transfer and as a builder of bridges,” continues Tapavicki. For instance, many of the students complete an internship at a mid-size company during their course of study. The initial contact often develops into a long-term relationship.
