,  February 24, 2016 Jacobs University President Professor Katja Windt and Professor Gerd-Volker Röschenthaler, Professor of Chemistry at Jacobs University, visited the University of Nanjing in China last week. On the agenda were talks with the president of the oldest university in China, Professor Jun Chen, its Vice President Professor Yi Pan, and other representatives of the institution, the two Associate Vice Presidents Professor Lijie Pu and Professor Jianqun Chen, the Dean of the private Jinling College which is affiliated to Nanjing University. For Katja Windt it was also the first official visit as part of a cooperation agreement between Jacobs University and the University of Nanjing. Vice President Yi Pan and his colleagues signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the campus of Jacobs University in July 2015. President Chen introduced the university, which is among the five best in China.  President Windt provided an insight into teaching and research at Jacobs University, highlighting its international character, its emphasis on transdisciplinary work, and the broad training it offers, which is not just subject-specific. She spoke of increased cooperation in the exchange between students and academic staff, and a close collaboration which is to be launched with Jinling College. An alliance already exists involving a lecturer exchange between Gerd-Volker Röschenthaler and Vice President Yi Pan, also a Professor of Chemistry, in the subject areas of bioactive fluorine and phosphorus compounds. Röschenthaler will be stepping up his involvement in the University of Nanjing by setting up a joint laboratory. During this visit he was appointed Concurrent Professor, a guest professorship associated with teaching at the Chinese University and collaboration with Vice President Yi Pan’s working group. Professor Röschenthaler has already delivered three lectures.
