At its general assembly in Hamburg, the German Marine Research Consortium (KDM) decided to establish a new strategy group on Marine Social Sciences and Humanities.

The decision reflects the rising importance of social sciences and humanities for the marine sciences, which is also apparent in the Marine Research Program of the German Government Mare:N or the Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources).
Contact person for the strategy group »Marine Social Sciences and Humanities« is Professor Achim Schlüter from the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) and Jacobs University. Andrea Koschinsky, Professor of Geosciences at Jacobs University, is already leading another KDM strategy group on mineral resources.

Linking scientists working in the field of marine social sciences and humanities the group is a platform for researchers from KDM member institutes and Universities as well as non-members. The group serves to strengthen not only the role of KDM to represent the German marine sciences abut also the newly emerging field of marine social sciences and humanities.

One central aim of the group is to work jointly with other strategy groups within KDM to enable problem-oriented research with a holistic perspective within German marine sciences. This creates an added value for science and society. The strategy group currently brings together colleagues from marine social sciences and humanities from Kiel, Hamburg, Potsdam, Bremen and Bremerhaven. Interested colleagues from the marine social sciences and humanities are invited to join.
