December 3, 2015 The international workshop "Peripheral Expressionisms,” which takes place at Jacobs University this week, focuses on artistic networks and cultural exchange between Germany and its eastern neighbors in the context of the European avant-garde movements. Scholars from Scandinavia, the Baltic states, central and eastern Europe, the Balkans, and southern Europe will converge on the university’s campus in Bremen-Nord on December 3-6.  On Thursday, Professor Isabel Wünsche will inaugurate the workshop and outline the results of the previous research project on "Avant-Garde Networks and Cultural Exchange between Germany and its Eastern Neighbors, 1910-1930.” The following days will be filled with presentations of academic papers and case studies on the development of the various art scenes and related cultural discourses in these European regions in the first half of the twentieth century. The workshop is funded by the Federal Government of Germany’s Culture and Media Representative and Jacobs University. Peripheral Expressionisms is an interdisciplinary research project focusing on the transnational formation, dissemination, and reception of German Expressionism in other European regions such as Scandinavia, the Baltic states, central and eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the Iberian Peninsula in the first half of the twentieth century. The project brings together scholars from the fields of art history, literary and cultural studies at universities, research institutes, and museums to establish a professional network for exploring the artistic relations, cultural encounters, and collaborative networking strategies that shaped modernist art practices in Europe throughout the first half of the twentieth century and were fundamental in creating a European cultural identity. Further details and program: http://www.expressionisms.com
