July 18, 2019
International orientation of science and teaching is a significant and important topic in China. The first International Education Week of the China University of Petroleum (UPC), one of the country's most renowned universities, took place from 30 June to 6 July 2019 under the motto "innovating training pattern, building an international campus, broadening an international perspective, cultivating top talents". Five professors from Jacobs University Bremen gave lectures as experts and pointed out international perspectives.
"Chinese universities are becoming increasingly interested in internationalization," states Prof. Dr. Werner Nau, who, as Dean of Jacobs University, initiated the cooperation together with the UPC in Qingdao. "We are delighted that five colleagues from Jacobs University have contributed to the new summer program with lectures from a wide variety of fields," Nau says. The chemistry professor, who in addition to his work at Jacobs University, is also a high-end foreign expert and foreign professor at the UPC.
The UPC is a research-oriented university with excellent teaching, originally famous for petroleum research and nowadays focusing on the natural sciences and engineering. The International Education Week of UPC is a training event which is open to Bachelor students from all over China. With around 10,000 participants, it is one of the largest international education events in the country. Jacobs University's participation is linked to the goal of promoting and strengthening international scientific exchange. The Director of the Office for International Affairs at the UPC, Fang Huang, is very pleased about the support from Germany. "In an international comparison, Jacobs University has delivered most of the contributions," he sums up.
