If you’re planning an event, you need staff – in service, for the kitchen, or technology. The online platform “Hyre” brings event organizers and help together, without going through an agency. The startup from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada already has numerous customers at home and now wants to make the leap to Europe. The Jury of the Startup Competition at Jacobs University found the idea convincing. Hyre founder Eropa Stein had the pleasure of taking home the winner’s check for 3000 Euro.

Over the past months, nearly 130 applications from Europe and North America were received by the organizational team of the Startup Competition, which was planned and organized by the students at the international Jacobs University. At a two-day event on the campus in Bremen, the ten best teams
presented their concepts.

Second place and a prize of 500 Euro went to a team from the Munich Business School and the University of Augsburg. The students developed a storage system called “Schüschu” for use in children’s rooms. Toys can be stored in the white perforated boxes made of recycled plastic. However, the boxes themselves can also be transformed into play equipment, for example an elephant or a pirate ship. Patent applications have already been submitted for Europe, the USA, and China.

Third place, and a prize of 250 Euro, was won by DocYet, a startup of the University of Aalborg in Denmark. Here, a virtual assistant helps travelers with health problems to find medical help locally, and it also clarifies symptoms and offers translations.

The Jacobs Startup Competition was supported by Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen (Business Promotion Bremen), by Axel Springer Plug and Play Accelerator, by Noah Advisors, and by Blinkist.

Starting in the fall, startup founders can submit their business idea to apply for the Jacobs Startup Competition 2018. In the first phase of the multi-month competition, the participants develop ideas for products and services. As they do so, they will receive support in the form of mentoring, working materials, background materials, and a network of successful entrepreneurs, professors, and consultants. In the finale, the best teams get an opportunity to present their ideas to a jury.
