Strong Women from the Near East
March 02, 2017
For the International Women’s Day on March 8th, Jacobs University is shining the spotlight on
female role models from the Near East. In his presentation, Professor Ahmed A. Karim, Guest
Professor for Psychology, will provide information on “Female Pioneers in Ancient Egypt and
the Near East: Influence of History on Gender Psychology.” After that, the topic will be how
female images affect female immigrants today.
Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. The native Pole is a role model around the
world. In contrast, pioneering women from the Near East are virtually unknown. In his presentation,
Professor Karim highlights the achievements of women in ancient Egypt and the Orient.
The psychotherapist and brain researcher points out their current relevance: How can these role
models inspire and challenge today’s young women with a background of migration? The background
is the social learning theory of the prestigious Stanford psychologist Albert Banduras. According to it, a
role model is most likely to be imitated when the model resembles the observer.
Gender roles describe behaviors that are considered appropriate or desirable in a society. They are
responsible for the relationship between the sexes and for the extent of discrimination and
disadvantagement of women.
