A World in Motion: The Degree Programs in Mobility at Jacobs University
July 15, 2016
“In my degree program, I especially appreciate the practical orientation,” says Eunhae Kim. “We deal with logistical topics not only in lectures and seminars, but also in the lab and on field trips.” The South Korean is studying Industrial Engineering and Management at the English-language Jacobs University – one of five Bachelor Programs in the Focus Area Mobility at the private university. It is about understanding and researching the continuously growing global movements of data, information, goods, and people.
Both trade and production are becoming increasingly international. The demand for management personnel who have management expertise and also possess technical and intercultural skills is growing rapidly. The degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management combines these areas in a unique way to prepare students for a variety of career options. They are familiarized with topics such as procurement and distribution of goods, control of supply chains, project management, and personnel management. Jacobs University always puts the focus on a practical orientation: a multi-month internship is a fixed component of all study programs. The students on the Industrial Engineering and Management program can even expand their knowledge through practical experience by spending an entire semester at a local or worldwide company of their choice.
“I like the work in our labs best,” says Dylan Hernandez, who studies Intelligent Mobile Systems and comes from Honduras. “To experience how something you thought up functions and moves is enriching.” In this degree program, the aim is to convey knowledge about the development of mobile learning systems that act autonomously. One example would be robots that detect objects underwater and bring them to the surface, or systems that help in logistics. Like all the offerings at Jacobs University, the degree program, which occupies the intersection of computer science, electrotechnology, and mechanical engineering, has a transdisciplinary structure.
The focus of the Electrical and Computer Engineering degree program, which also runs for three years, is the digital revolution. In everyday life, but also in business, digitization and the associated requirements for signal processing, secure transmission, and the localization of mobile (autonomous) systems are playing an ever greater role. The students learn how to master them. Graduates of the program are in demand among global companies and prestigious universities. Topics such as computer architecture, signal processing, transmission technology, coding, security, and localization are dealt with here. As in other disciplines, the students are involved in the actual research work of their professors at an early stage.
Without computers, digitization would be absolutely inconceivable; computer systems are the heart of information technology. In the Computer Science degree program, students acquire central competencies in programming, software development, or data visualization. The curriculum is rounded out by courses in mathematics or engineering. In addition to theoretical aspects, practical applications and participation in international research projects play an important role.
“The close contact with professors is great. As a small group, we get a lot of attention and help. This raises the level tremendously,” says Kendra Reiter, who is studying Mathematics. The curriculum includes topics such as algebra, geometry, and principles of topology, along with applied mathematics and computer mathematics. Those studying for a Bachelor Degree work closely with older students and instructors in research groups. Many graduates continue their studies at one of the top universities in Europe or the USA. In national and international college rankings, the program occupies some of the top spots – like many of the other degree programs at the private Jacobs University.
