Code of Conduct and Ethics Policy
Code of Conduct and Ethics PolicyAt Constructor University Bremen gGmbH (CU), we are dedicated to educating and empowering talented individuals from all backgrounds to become global citizens. Our mission is rooted in academic freedom, integrity, and equal opportunity. We support academic freedom and encourage the exchange of different ideas and perspectives. All members of the academic community shall foster respectful dialogue, even when views differ. We strive for excellence in research, teaching, and operations, with a commitment to sustainability, social responsibility, and innovation. These values are foundational to our governance and community life.
To uphold these values in daily practice, we have defined clear standards to ensure that ethical and responsible behavior guides all our actions. This Code of Conduct and Ethics Policy defines the principles for ethical collaboration and interaction among management, staff, students, and partners—both within the framework of the University and beyond. Fulfilling these commitments requires the active, personal engagement of everyone in our community, going beyond legal compliance to embody a shared culture of responsibility.
We Treat All Individuals with Fainess, Respect and Dignity
We treat all members of our community with fairness, respect, and dignity. Integrity guides our behavior in academic, administrative, and interpersonal matters. Integrity also includes avoiding actions that could undermine trust or damage the reputation of CU. Acting ethically means communicating honestly, respecting differing views, and taking responsibility for our actions. This applies equally to leadership and students. Also, academic roles come with significant responsibility. Manipulating assessments, exerting undue influence over students, or failing to treat all students equally constitutes a violation of this Code.
We Foster an Inclusive Environment that Embraces Diversity
CU fosters a diverse and inclusive environment that embraces individuals of all backgrounds. Discrimination— whether based on race, color, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, or disability— shall not be tolerated. Abuse of power in any form is strictly prohibited. This includes leveraging one’s position to seek personal favors, such as gifts, invitations, or preferential treatment. Even indirect coercion, such as suggestive remarks or expectations, is considered unethical and will be treated seriously. Our policies are designed to uphold fairness, prevent exclusionary behavior, and promote equity. We are committed to addressing conflicts constructively and creating inclusive spaces where every voice can be heard and respected.
We Uphold Academic and Scientific Integrity
We uphold the highest standards in education and research. Scientific and academic integrity are paramount, and all members of CU are expected to adhere to principles of good academic practice. This includes careful documentation, proper citation, transparent peer review, and acknowledgment of others' contributions. Supervisors and mentors play a critical role in fostering a culture of excellence, especially for early-career researchers.
We Communicate Openly, Respectfully, and Transparently
Transparency is the basis for trust within and outside the university. Open communication helps us learn from mistakes and ensures inclusive decision-making. Internally, we encourage feedback and foster a climate where problems can be addressed without fear of reprisal. Externally, we represent CU through designated spokespersons and handle sensitive information with care. Official documents and communications are accurate and in line with institutional values. CU expects its community members to uphold university values in digital spaces. Disrespectful, harassing, or discriminatory content -even in private channels - may constitute a breach of this Code. All digital communication and online behavior shall uphold the same standards of respect and professionalism as in person interactions. Harassment, surveillance, or unethical use of digital tools - including AI - are strictly prohibited. Individuals experiencing subtle but repeated or unwanted behavior - particularly where a power imbalance exists - are encouraged to report these incidents in confidence through CU’s whistleblowing system. Through this system, CU ensures protection and anonymity. CU strictly prohibits retaliation against anyone who, in good faith, reports misconduct or refuses to participate in unethical or inappropriate behavior. Protection extends to those who support such individuals or participate in investigations.
We Prioritize the Well-Being, Health and Safety of all Members of Our Community
Constructor University prioritizes the well-being of its community. Health and safety are essential elements of a productive academic environment. We comply with all relevant occupational safety laws and guidelines and strive to reduce risks through regular assessments and improvements. Health at CU is understood holistically, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional aspects. We promote a compassionate and equitable workplace, where dialogue, empathy, and mutual respect guide our interactions. Conflicts should be addressed early, constructively, and with the support of mediation when necessary.
We Protect the Environment and Promote the Sustainable Use of Resources
Sustainability is embedded in the values and practices of Constructor University. We are committed to using resources efficiently, reducing waste, and promoting environmentally conscious decisions in all areas of university life. Teaching, research, and operations are continuously aligned with ecological responsibility. Our employees and partners are expected to adhere to applicable environmental and animal welfare regulations. By prioritizing sustainable behavior, we contribute to long-term ecological and social well-being.
We Take Responsibility for Our Actions
Compliance with legal requirements and institutional rules is a fundamental obligation for all CU members. We act in accordance with laws governing academic, financial, and operational matters. This includes proper use of university resources, avoidance of conflicts of interest, and adherence to anti-corruption and data protection standards. Managers are expected to lead by example, educate their teams, and take corrective action when necessary. Constructor University also discourages personal or romantic relationships where a power imbalance exists, as these can lead to real or perceived conflicts of interest, favoritism, or coercion.
