As the opening of the ceremony for the 200th anniversary of the story of the “Bremen Town Musicians” by the Brothers Grimm, Dr. Reinhard Goltz will present some very interesting historical facts. The story of the Bremen Town Musicians It has been translated into over a hundred languages. The focus of the talk will be on the Low German texts of the children's and family fairy tales. Although the Bremen Town Musicians were originally recorded in High German, there have long since been versions in Low German, which the speaker will present.
Every year at this time of the year, the United Nations (UNESCO) calls for the celebration of Mother Tongue Day worldwide. In honor of this day Dr. Goltz, director of the Institute for Low German Language in Bremen, Schnoor, will read the story of the Bremen Town Musicians by candlelight in Plattdeutsch, a nearly lost German language. Fortunately, the fairy tale tradition of the Grimm’s does not end there - especially Hein Hoop wrote a series of cheeky fairy tales 40 years ago, which are worth listening to.
About the speaker:
Dr. Reinhard Goltz is an internationally recognized expert in the field of the almost extinct Low German language (Plattdeutsch) and literature. He is active in numerous organizations and committees in Germany and abroad which seek to preserve and promote the language. At the Institute for Low German Language in Bremen, Schnoor, he deals with questions about Platt every day in schools, theaters, and institutes of higher learning. In addition, he is involved in numerous modern translations: The spectrum ranges from Harry Potter to Asterix and Popeye to pop music titles.
